Located on Pond Lane, the new Middlebury-based Clinic will provide improved convenience, leading-edge imaging technology and easy clinical collaboration
Middlebury, VT – A nearly year-long facilities investment by University of Vermont Health Network – Porter Medical Center will move three of the hospital’s outpatient specialty care clinics into a shared space, replace aging imaging technology and pave the way for easier cross-clinic collaboration by clinicians and care team members.
The project will bring together Porter’s Podiatry, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation clinics in a shared space at 110 Pond Lane in Middlebury. The hospital is renovating the existing building, with work expected to begin in October and take approximately 10 months.
Devon Anderson, MD, PhD, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert who leads Porter’s orthopedic surgery practice, said the project’s impact will be felt by both patients and members of the clinics’ care teams.
“Improving our teams’ ability to collaboratively care for patients and providing access to leading-edge imaging are hugely impactful and will be felt by patients and our entire care team,” he said. “This project really compliments Porter’s existing work with Middlebury College, our support of athletes in our community and our ability to respond to increased demand for high-quality musculoskeletal care that supports older Vermonters and is delivered in a safe and efficient environment.”
The updated facility will encompass 11,752 square feet, including an 1,800 square foot modern rehabilitation gym – an increase of about 550 square feet over the department’s current gym – as well as an occupational therapy space, private exam rooms, and two state-of-the-art x-ray rooms. The updates are a significant improvement over the current layout of the specialty clinics.
“These teams already work together and to be able to continue doing so in a shared space and serve patients in a multidisciplinary way is going to add so much value for members of our community,” said Brandi Helm, associate vice president of operations at Porter Medical Center. “Not only will this project provide a better location for these services, it will be state-of-the-art, allow our clinical teams to do more imaging-based diagnostic work, and enable Porter Medical Center to provide leading-edge musculoskeletal care close to home in a timely and efficient manner.”
Hospital leaders say the investment is critical for specialty practices that have largely outgrown their current locations, as well as aging equipment that needs to be replaced.
As the area’s population continues to grow and age simultaneously, Helm called it critical for Porter to implement thoughtful long-term planning to anticipate increased needs for services like Podiatry, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. The hospital’s Rehabilitation and Orthopedics practices are both currently operating at capacity, with significant increases in demand expected over the next several years.
“We know Vermont is aging and it’s crucial that Porter develop and implement long-term planning that enables us to keep up with increased demand for specialty care supporting older Vermonters,” said Helm. “The new space will allow these important practices to grow and continue improving patient access to services, as close to home as possible.”
The opening of the new facility, which is expected in late summer of 2026, is not expected to change operating hours for any of the specialty clinics involved. The clinics’ current hours of operation are 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.
