Ongoing Programs

Breast Cancer Screening Project

An in-house mammography program which offers reduced-cost mammograms to eligible women living in our area. Workplace presentations regarding good breast health (self breast exam, clinical breast exam, and mammogram) are available.

Lifeline

An in-home, emergency response system that gives you and your family members the confidence and freedom to enable you to live on your own. A simple press of your button puts you in touch with a caring Lifeline monitor (standing by 24 hours a day, seven days a week) who finds out what kind of help you need. 388-8817

Expectant Parents Class: 6+1

This six-week series covers pregnancy, labor, birth, breathing/relaxation skills, care of the newborn, and family changes. New this year is a 7th class, after babies are born, for parents and new babies together.

Condensed Weekend Expectant Parents' Class

A  weekend version of our 6 week course which meets two mornings in one weekend.. Highlights pregnancy, labor, birth, breathing/relaxation skills. Meets 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday of one weekend. Call for dates. Pre-registration required.

Refresher Class for Expectant Parents

Three-hour evening class for parents expecting another baby. Review breathing/relaxation skills and learn what's new. Pre-registration required.

Prenatal Exercise Class

Join other pregnant women for a series of safe and appropriate exercise and relaxation techniques to improve muscle tone, strength, flexibility, and endurance during pregnancy and labor. Meets Monday evenings from 5:00-6:30 p.m.

Sibling Class

This one-hour class helps older brothers and sisters prepare for a new baby in the family. Day, evening and Saturday classes available by appointment. Pre-registration required.

Breastfeeding Class

A three-hour evening class for new or expectant mothers to discuss the benefits of breastfeeding to mother and baby, deciding whether or not to breastfeed, returning to work, and more. Meets 6:00-9:00 p.m. Call for dates.  Pre-registration required.

Basic Diabetes Education Program

This 3-hour class is offered twice a month for people with newly diagnosed diabetes and their family or people who need to brush up on their diabetes management. 388-4723

Living with Diabetes

A comprehensive diabetes self management course to include nutrition, medications, monitoring, exercise, stress reduction and acute/chronic complications. This course meets weekly, in a two-hour session, for five weeks and is offered twice a year. 388-4723

First Aid/CPR

American Heart Association CPR courses and basic First Aid taught by certified instructors.   May be geared to specific requirements.   388-4723

Smoking Cessation Class

If you are ready to quit smoking or quit using spit tobacco or other tobacco products, Porter Hospital invites you to join a series of classes modeled after the American Cancer Society's Freshstart Program.  This program uses group structure and interaction to encourage and support positive change, addresses the behaviors, thoughts and feelings of smokers, and presents an active and practical approach to becoming and staying smoke free.   Class content creates an awareness of tobacco use as a chemical addiction, a habit and psychological dependency, and includes information on the stages of change theory, weight control and stress management.
