Listen to what recent parents say about the new Porter birthing center..
Center is a standard of care for women in Vermont, and today continues to be a leader in family-centered care, obstetrics and midwifery.
In 2007, Porter Medical Center modernized the maternity department and opened a greatly expanded Birthing Center. It has become a sought out warm and personal environment where women’s preferences and families’ needs came first and where childbirth could unfold naturally.
Expectant parents can choose from our 24-hour team of certified nurse midwives, who are advanced practice nurses specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, or our board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists. Both practices are accepting new patients.
And while Porter believes that childbirth is a natural process, a number of pain management options, including water therapy, pain medicine and intrathecals (spinal anesthesia) are available for those women who need or want them.
Options for your labor and birth

Come meet our Certified Nurse-Midwives Martha Redpath, Heather Kidde, and Maggie Gardner at their office in Vergennes. Nurse-Midwives are advanced practice nurses with Master's Degrees in Midwifery and Women's Health. Midwifery care is centered upon the belief that pregnancy and childbirth are a normal physiological process and the belief that establishing a relationship built on trust and information is essential to the experience.
The midwives at Tapestry know that birth is a unique journey, and strive to honor your individual needs while providing safe, evidence based care. Clients give birth at Porter Hospital's lovely Birthing Center which utilizes the LDRP model of care. This means that women and their families stay in the same homelike room they give birth in for their whole stay. Their aim is to provide skilled continuous labor support for clients seeking to avoid pain medication and those desiring epidural or other types of pain relief. They also collaborate with doulas, acupuncuturists, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors, physical therapists, etc.
When issues arise outside their scope of practice or medical expertise, they work in collaboration with the OB/GYNs at Porter to provide the best care possible. Tapestry Midwifery also offers holistic women's health care by providing annual exams, pap tests, menopause care, IUD placement, birth control counseling, and STI testing.
